The undersea Kikai Caldera, located south of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kyushu, Japan, experienced a devastating volcanic eruption 7,300 years ago. This super-eruption devastated the region, rendering the western half of Japan uninhabitable and resulting in massive population movements that changed history forever.
This work captures the beginning moments of this ancient catastrophe and depicts its immense energy.
The work combines the serenity of the ocean with the ferocity of the eruption through a vivid contrast of cool and warm colors. Deep blues symbolize the surrounding ocean, while fiery oranges and reds depict the molten core of the eruption. Abstract patterns race across the canvas, evoking explosive chaos, while splashes of white light symbolize air bubbles and ash particles. Together, these elements create a dynamic, almost dreamlike movement that reflects the destructive beauty and primal power of nature.
