Contrail depicts the final journey of a young girl's life. She walks silently up a symbolic white slope leading to the heavens. The slope represents her determination and quiet courage in accepting her fate, and her strength towards the end of her life.
A contrail stretches across the sky, symbolizing her fleeting existence. Like the clouds that are blown away by the wind, her life is also destined to fade away. The faint silhouette of a window in the background represents the world she sees from her hospital room or home. The window alludes to the boundary between the real and the spiritual world, functioning as a crossroads between the real and the transcendent.
The composition, layered with light and texture in a palette of soft whites, blues and greens, lends a calm serenity to the heavy subject matter. The girl's fearless posture and the glow of the white road suggest death not as an end, but as a transition to a greater existence.
